CoCoCo

The Playground’s annual Colorado Composers Concert (CoCoCo) showcases chamber music written by residents of Colorado. Perhaps our most important concert of the year, CoCoCo has become the highlight of each season. This concert provides an important opportunity for composers in Colorado to see their works performed. Moreover the event promotes a spirit of community among members of the new music and arts community across the state.

Typically, all but the most famous of composers have very few opportunities to hear their works performed live.  CoCoCo provides a valuable opportunity for both composers and their audiences.  Because we have designed CoCoCo as a call for scores rather than a competition, we judge the entries on their own merits instead of according to how they compare to each other.  This allows us to present works of quality in widely diverse styles, without designating one or several pieces "the winner(s)."

For the inaugural CoCoCo in 2007, we received approximately 30 submissions and chose eleven for performance. In size of ensemble they ranged from one to six, and in style they varied from improvisational jazz to tonal neo-classical to avant garde. This number grew steadily in 2008 and we expect it to continue doing so. Many of these compositions and composers are now a regular part of our season programming.

Following the performance is a reception, where composers, performers, and audience members meet and mingle. Judging from comments, the reception is as valuable as the performance itself. Many express gratitude for the opportunity to meet each other and share experiences.

new in 2009

We were proud to announce our new Developing Composers Program, which showcased works written by composers in grades K-12

Also new in 2009 was a $500 commission prize awarded for the composition of a new work specifically for the Playground. This tradition will continue in 2010. It is an honor for us, as an ensemble, to serve those writing music in this area.
